Why does this seemingly ordinary building hold such a significant place in Czech musical history? This is the Prague Conservatory. It is Czech Republic’s oldest music school.

Founded in 1808 the Prague Conservatory stands as a beacon of musical education. Its establishment followed the esteemed Conservatoire de Paris. Local aristocrats and burghers championed its creation. František Josef of Vrtba and Jan Nepomuk Nostitz-Rieneck were among the founders.

Classes finally commenced in 1811 after delays from the Napoleonic Wars. Bedřich Diviš Weber became its first director. Weber shaped its curriculum after the Paris Conservatory.

The Union for the Improvement of Music in Bohemia provided crucial financial support. This ensured the school’s operation for a century. In 1891 Antonín Dvořák joined the faculty. He headed the composition department. Dvořák served as the school’s director from 1901 to 1904.

Many famous composers studied here. Vítězslav Novák and Josef Suk count among Dvořák’s students. Suk later became director himself. Other notable students include Rudolf Friml and Franz Lehár.

The Prague Conservatory offers education across many instruments. Accordion guitar piano and organ are included. Students can also study singing composition conducting and acting. The institution boasts its own orchestras and a theater company. Annually the school stages around 250 concerts. It also puts on about 40 theatrical performances.

Hector Berlioz even visited the Prague Conservatory. He praised its director Jan Bedřich Kittl. Berlioz admired Kittl’s dedication to his art.

The main campus is located at Na rejdišti 77/1 Prague 1. There are two other locations. One is in Pálffyho Palace in Malá Strana. The other resides in Prague’s Old Town.

The Prague Conservatory has had many notable directors. They include Bedřich Diviš Weber Antonín Dvořák and Josef Suk. Vilém Kurz and Václav Holzknecht also served as directors. Many famous musicians have graduated from here. Karel Ančerl and Jiří Bělohlávek are among its alumni. Josef Slavík and Jan Kubelík also studied here.

In 1945 some professors and students founded the Academy of Performing Arts. This led to the creation of the Dance Conservatory in 2001. The Prague Conservatory continues to shape musical talent. Its rich history and dedication to the arts makes it a landmark. The Prague Conservatory remains a vital institution in Prague.
