Two historic buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries stand in Butantã. They are the Sertanista House and the Bandeirante House.

The Butantan Institute was founded in 1901. It was created to fight bubonic plague. A laboratory was set up near the Bacteriological Institute. It produced serums. Later it became the Butantan Institute.

The University City was inaugurated in 1934. It gathered existing institutions into one place.

The Eusébio Matoso Bridge opened in 1940. It connected Butantã to the other side of the river.

Neighborhoods started emerging in the 1920s.

Butantã borders Taboão da Serra and Osasco. There is a lot of commerce, services and leisure between these cities.

Butantã has the most museums in São Paulo. Most of them are in the University City and the Butantan Institute.
