What secrets lie hidden beneath the surface? Here, at the Pozzo presso Sgonico, the earth whispers tales of mystery and adventure. The Pozzo presso Sgonico is more than just a hole in the ground. It’s a gateway to another world, a portal to the hidden wonders beneath our feet. This cave entrance, nestled near the village of Sgonico, invites us to explore the depths of the Karst plateau. The Pozzo presso Sgonico’s main entrance sits at an elevation of 267 meters. Its depth plunges down to 72 meters, creating a total descent of 72 meters. The cave stretches 110 meters horizontally. The entrance to Pozzo presso Sgonico is a bit unassuming. It’s partially hidden, veiled by rocks and overgrowth. The entry is located on the edge of a small, untamed sinkhole. As you descend into Pozzo presso Sgonico, the space opens into a surprisingly regular shape. Small niches dot the walls, tempting glimpses into hidden corners, though many are unreachable. The bottom of the Pozzo presso Sgonico consists of a debris slope. At its end, another smaller shaft descends further. But this lower section is currently blocked by stones. In 1981, further exploration revealed more of the Pozzo presso Sgonico’s secrets. Beyond the initial drop, the shaft widens significantly and plunges 42 meters. Several “windows” or openings branch off during the descent. Unfortunately, the bottom of this main shaft became a dumping ground for local villagers. A narrow opening, about 3 meters up from the debris-filled floor, offers a way forward, though it presents a challenging passage. This opening leads to yet another shaft, 9 meters deep. This opens into a large cavern adorned with beautiful formations. From this cavern, two small passages lead to another large cavern. Thankfully, in 2017, the Societá di Studi Carsici A. F. Lindner cleaned the Pozzo presso Sgonico. They removed all the refuse from the base of the main entrance shaft. The Pozzo presso Sgonico stands as a testament to the power of nature and the allure of the unknown. It’s a reminder that adventure can be found even in the most unexpected places.
