Slipping through a narrow opening near Monrupino, we find Pozzo presso Monrupino. This isn’t just any cave. It’s a portal to another world. A world hidden beneath the familiar Karst landscape. The official Catasto Grotte (Cave Registry) calls it “Pozzo presso Monrupino.” It’s also known as “Fovea dell’Albero.” The entrance is almost hidden. It’s disguised by boulders and nestled amongst old stone quarries. In October 2019, explorers carefully charted its secrets. They used GPS to pinpoint its location, recording its coordinates for future adventurers. Pozzo presso Monrupino stretches 25 meters horizontally. It plunges 30 meters deep into the earth. At the bottom, 353 meters above sea level, lies a large cavern adorned with dazzling cave formations. Recent explorations have revealed a new passage. It branches off from the main cavern, leading deeper into the earth’s embrace. This passage winds and twists through narrow, challenging sections, some richly decorated with nature’s artistry. Imagine the thrill of those first explorers, squeezing through the tight spaces, their lamps illuminating the sparkling formations for the very first time.
