We stand before Pozzo presso l’Abisso Colognatti, a small, unassuming cave entrance that holds a connection to a much larger, more dramatic underground realm. Pozzo presso l’Abisso Colognatti, “The Well near the Colognatti Abyss”, is a modest cave in its own right, only 7 meters deep. But its name hints at its proximity to something grander: the Abisso Mauro Colognatti. Imagine a pine-scented breeze rustling through the trees. Follow a path leading to Monte Orsario, a well-known peak in the area. The path skirts a furrowed field, below which lies a small, steep-sided sinkhole. At the bottom of this sinkhole waits the entrance to the Abisso Mauro Colognatti. Just a few meters to the left, another sinkhole cradles the wider mouth of Pozzo presso l’Abisso Colognatti. Now, descend into Pozzo presso l’Abisso Colognatti itself. At the bottom, the northeast wall reveals several fissures. These fissures hint at a deeper past, possibly leading to greater depths that are now sealed off. On the north wall, a short, upward-sloping branch offers a tantalizing glimpse of another hidden passage. This modest cave serves as a prelude to the much larger and deeper Abisso Mauro Colognatti, a testament to the interconnected nature of the Karst landscape. While Pozzo presso l’Abisso Colognatti is only 5 meters in planimetric development, the nearby abyss boasts a development of 92 meters and a depth of 168 meters. The Abisso Mauro Colognatti is named after Mauro Colognatti, a Triestine speleologist. A bronze plaque bearing his name marks the entrance to the abyss, a poignant reminder of the human connection to this subterranean world. Both caves are located near Trieste, in the municipality of Monrupino. They share not only proximity but also the dramatic beauty of the Karst landscape. The two dolines, or sinkholes, containing the cave entrances are a characteristic feature of this unique geological formation.
