Whispers of legends echo through the valley. They speak of Poustevna a place where history and nature intertwine.

Here before you stands Poustevna a breathtaking mountaintop haven in the Beskids. Its story began not with grand castles or mighty cathedrals but with simple shelters humble hermitages from which the place takes its name. In the 1800s members of the Pohorska Jednota Radhos mountain association recognized Poustevna’s potential. They envisioned a destination to attract visitors. They cleared paths laid out trails and built the first modest lodgings.

These early structures proved insufficient. Demand grew. The association turned to the architectural firm of Michal Urbanek. Dušan Jurkovič a young architect designed two iconic buildings Libušín and Maměnka. They opened in 1899. These structures showcase a unique blend of folk architecture and Art Nouveau. The interiors were equally stunning. Frescoes by Mikoláš Aleš depicted scenes of local legends. The rooms boasted ornate ceilings handcrafted furniture and exquisite light fixtures.

Poustevna’s fame grew. In 1928 President Tomáš Masaryk visited although he stayed at the nearby Tanečnice hotel. World War II brought hardship. The buildings suffered damage under the occupation. They fell into disrepair during the latter half of the 20th century.

Then a tragic event struck. In 2014 Libušín was severely damaged by fire. The cause? Improperly installed heating equipment. This devastating loss was a wake-up call. A massive fundraising campaign ensued. Millions of crowns were raised from public donations government support and insurance. The restoration painstakingly recreated Libušín’s 1925 appearance. Local timber was used mirroring Jurkovič’s original methods.

On July 30 2020 Libušín reopened. It rose again like a phoenix from the ashes. This restored jewel stands as a testament to preservation dedication and the enduring spirit of Poustevna. Its beauty captivates visitors. Its story resonates with the timeless allure of the Beskids. It stands proudly. A symbol of cultural heritage resilience and the magic of Poustevna.
