Ever wondered what it looks like when art imitates life. Here we are in front of Poupě Sculpture. Prague is a city full of statues. Some are symbolic. Some are contemporary or abstract. Others date back to the communist era. Some are simply odd. They make you think what on Earth.

Many of these odd-looking statues have fascinating stories. Some are just peculiar. One such artist known for his thought-provoking pieces is David Černý.

David Černý is a Czech sculptor. He is known to spark controversy. His defiant sculptures can be seen in numerous locations around Prague. Born in Prague in 1967, Černý became famous in 1991. He painted a Soviet tank pink. This act served as a war memorial in central Prague. It also got him arrested.

Černý’s work often challenges norms. It invites viewers to question the world around them. He is not the only artist creating interesting art here.

Another notable artist is Anna Chromy. She was a Czech-born artist raised in Austria. Chromy created Il Commendatore. It is also known as The Cloak of Conscience. The spooky statue with a hollow inside sits outside the Estates Theater. Mozart conducted the 1787 premiere of his opera Don Giovanni here.

Local legend says that if you take a picture of it with a flash. An image of a face appears in the photo. This happens despite the statue having no facial features.

Olbram Zoubek created The Broken Men. It is a Memorial to the Victims of Communism. It shows seven bronze figures descending a flight of stairs. The statues appear more decayed the further away they are from you. They lose limbs and their bodies break open. It symbolizes how political prisoners were affected by Communism.

Jaroslav Róna created the Franz Kafka Statue Prague. It is located next to the Spanish Synagogue in the Jewish quarter of Prague. This interesting metal statue is peculiar. The Franz Kafka Statue has become a famous landmark. It is often a starting point for organized tours of the Jewish Quarter.

Černý also created Piss. It is located next to the Kafka Museum in Malá Strana. The fountain consists of two men peeing. If you look carefully you’ll see that the basin is the shape of the Czech Republic. Visitors can send SMS messages to the statues. Then the statues move and write the text of the message.

Another of David Cerny’s sculptures is Hanging Man Statue Prague. This portrays Sigmund Freud hanging by one hand onto a roof. Many people say he is hinting at the man’s hopelessness in the modern world. He may be highlighting the possibility of the man saving his life.

The Franz Kafka head statue in Národní třída has become a permanent landmark. It is made from steel. This modern installation has turned the back courtyard of the shopping centre into a pleasant spot.

You’ll have to go searching for Statue of King Wenceslas Riding an Upside-Down Dead Horse. It is located inside the Lucerna Palace in Wenceslas Square. The dead horse is upside down hanging in the air. King Wenceslas is riding him upright. According to locals, it is a mocking reference to the statue of Wenceslas riding a horse.
