Picture the scene: a vast expanse of water shimmering under the Antiguan sun. This is Potworks Dam Reservoir. A truly remarkable sight.
Potworks Dam Reservoir isn’t just a pretty face. It’s the largest reservoir in the Caribbean. It holds approximately 4 million cubic meters of water. This vital resource supplies drinking water to the island. Antigua’s drinking water supply is often affected by drought. This makes Potworks Dam Reservoir even more important.
The reservoir’s name tells a tale. It’s named after a ceramics company. This area used to be a sugar cane farm. The Codrington family owned the farm. They were prominent planters. The potters here made clay pots. They exported these pots with molasses. The area is part of the island’s heavy clay soil zone.
Potworks Dam Reservoir wasn’t always here. It was built in the late 1960s. The dam was constructed to stop recurrent water emergencies. Construction covered a 19th-century bridge and parts of old buildings. A big surprise happened during construction. A huge rainstorm flooded the area. The seabed wasn’t prepared. The dam finally opened in May 1970. A plaque commemorates this event.
The reservoir proved its worth during a severe drought in 1974. The drought lasted from January to mid-August. However a much longer drought tested its limits. A 21-month drought from 1983 to 1985 nearly emptied it. The lake completely dried up by late 1984. Antigua had to import drinking water from other islands. Thankfully this should not happen again. Seawater desalination plants now support the water supply.
Today Potworks Dam Reservoir fills up again after major storms. It filled up in February 2024 for instance. The reservoir is about 2.5 kilometers long. It covers approximately 130 hectares. The watershed area is about 24 square kilometers.
Beyond its crucial role in providing water Potworks Dam Reservoir is an important habitat. Bird watchers flock to its western edge. You might spot West Indian whistling ducks snowy egrets cattle egrets and ospreys. It truly is a fascinating place. A testament to human ingenuity and nature’s resilience. A place where history and nature intertwine. Potworks Dam Reservoir is an essential part of Antigua’s story.
