Listen closely. The wind whispers tales of Pottinger Battery. Right here before us stand the silent sentinels of a bygone era. This isn’t just a collection of crumbling bricks. Pottinger Battery is a vital part of Hong Kong’s rich history a testament to its strategic importance.

Built between 1901 and 1902 Pottinger Battery was designed to safeguard the eastern entrance to Hong Kong Harbour. Two mighty 9.2-inch Mark X guns stood guard. They commanded a crucial position opposite Lei Yue Mun Redoubt. Imagine the roar of these behemoths the thunderous echo across the waters.

Originally known as Devil’s Peak Lower Battery it shared its location with Gough Battery. Gough Battery sat higher on Devil’s Peak. Both were part of a complex defensive system protecting Hong Kong. The guns weren’t just for show. They played a vital role in protecting the harbour.

A fascinating detail few know is that these guns didn’t stay here forever. In the build-up to World War II the two 9.2-inch guns were relocated. They were moved to Bokhara Battery on Cape D’Aguilar. Imagine the logistical feat of moving such massive weaponry.

Today Pottinger Battery is a shadow of its former self. The site was last cleared in 2002. Now nature has largely reclaimed it. The brickwork of the magazine has been removed. It was taken for reuse in other projects. Yet even in its decay the battery’s strategic location remains unmistakable.

Nearby on the foreshore you’ll find remnants of Defence Electric Lights. An engine room similar to the one at Cape Collinson still stands. This dates from 1938 to 1939. These lights helped ships navigate the waters. They helped protect the harbour at night.

Pottinger Battery isn’t just a ruin. It is a poignant reminder of Hong Kong’s past. Its history speaks volumes about the importance of defence. It speaks of the technological advancements. It shows the changing strategies of warfare. It’s a story etched in stone. Or rather in the slowly crumbling remains of brick and mortar. Stand here a moment. Let the past speak to you.
