Imagine a time when Prague’s edges blurred. This is the story of Posezen\u00ed Na Slatin\u00e1ch. Once a vibrant community. Now a place of quiet reflection.
Posezen\u00ed Na Slatin\u00e1ch began as a settlement. It was on the outskirts of Prague in the 1920s. The land was once marshy. It was deemed unsuitable for farming. It was also not ideal for building. Yet people built homes here.
These weren’t grand structures. These were simple dwellings. They were built from whatever materials people could find. The colony grew quickly. By the 1930s, about 2,300 people called Na Slatin\u00e1ch home.
Life in Posezen\u00ed Na Slatin\u00e1ch was unique. The colony developed its own infrastructure. There was electricity. There were water pumps. They even had shops. Barbers. Grocers. A pub called U \u0158eh\u00e1k\u016f. It became a self-sufficient town within a city.
The people formed clubs. They formed sports teams. They had cultural groups. They even had political organizations. Life bustled here.
But change came. From the 1960s, the city wanted to tear down the colony. They wanted to relocate residents to modern apartments. Some locals accepted the offer. Many chose to stay.
After 1989, the area declined. The rural charm faded. Auto repair shops appeared. So did junkyards. Neglected gardens became common. The area became home to people without housing.
Today, Posezen\u00ed Na Slatin\u00e1ch is a mix of old and new. Some original buildings remain. Gardens persist. A reminder of the past.
In 2022, Petr Stibral created a monument. It honored the garden colony. It was a part of the Art in Public Space festival. The statue has been moved to Bohdalec.
The Slatinsk\u00fd stream flows nearby. It starts in a forest. It disappears underground. It reappears near the colonies. Then it joins the Boti\u010d stream.
Today, Posezen\u00ed Na Slatin\u00e1ch faces new threats. Urban development plans threaten demolition. Hopefully, its legacy will endure. The Za Slatiny association works to preserve its history.
