Can you imagine a tiny island transforming into a global giant? Right here, before you, lies Port Island, also known as Chiwan. Port Island isn’t just a patch of land. It’s a testament to Shenzhen’s incredible growth. Port Island is part of the larger Port of Shenzhen, a sprawling network of ports along Shenzhen’s 160-mile coastline. This port system is the third largest in China and one of the busiest container ports worldwide. In 2022 alone, it handled over 30 million TEUs.
Port Island itself focuses on container shipping. It’s known as a cost-effective hub for Chinese exports. Its deep-water location makes it ideal for large vessels. Port Island’s location on the western side of the Port of Shenzhen places it in the Pearl River Estuary. This strategic positioning connects it to the bustling Pearl River region, providing access to major cities like Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The Shekou Cruise Center, also within the western port area, offers ferry services to these destinations and more. It’s a modern facility, opened in 2016, replacing the older Shekou Passenger Terminal.
Port Island’s transformation mirrors Shenzhen’s own rapid development. Emerging from humble beginnings, it now plays a vital role in global trade. It is a key component of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, an initiative aimed at boosting investment and cooperation along the historic maritime Silk Road. The Port of Shenzhen, including Port Island, boasts over 140 berths. These cater to a wide range of vessels, from massive cargo ships to passenger ferries. The port bustles with activity. Over 40 shipping companies operate here, managing around 130 international container routes. Every month, 560 ships call at the port. Additionally, 21 feeder routes link it to other ports in the Pearl River Delta. So, as you stand here, looking at Port Island, remember. You’re not just seeing an island. You’re witnessing a symbol of Shenzhen’s dynamic spirit and its connection to the world.
