Isn’t it remarkable how a place can transform from a cultural center to a national shrine? That is exactly the story of the Saint John Paul II National Shrine. This shrine stands as a testament to the life and legacy of Pope John Paul II. It welcomes Catholics and people of all faiths.
Originally, this building was the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. It was envisioned as a place to explore the intersection of faith and culture. Bishop Adam Maida proposed it after a meeting with Pope John Paul II in 1989. The Pope suggested a center for interfaith issues.
The cultural center opened in March 2001. President George W. Bush and other dignitaries attended the ceremony. But the center struggled financially after the September 11 attacks. It eventually closed except by appointment.
In 2011, the Knights of Columbus purchased the cultural center. They transformed it into a shrine dedicated to Blessed John Paul II. Cardinal Donald Wuerl declared it a diocesan shrine. After John Paul II’s canonization in 2014, it became the Saint John Paul II National Shrine.
The shrine features a permanent exhibit called “A Gift of Love: The Life of Saint John Paul II”. It has moving videos and personal artifacts of the Pope. You will find interactive displays that guide you through his life.
The Saint John Paul II National Shrine also houses the Redemptor Hominis Church. The Luminous Mysteries Chapel are here as well. Both are decorated with mosaic art. Father Marko Rupnik designed these mosaics. Daily Mass is celebrated in the Redemptor Hominis Church. The Luminous Mysteries Chapel houses a first-class relic of John Paul II which is available for veneration. It is a sacred blood relic.
The 130,000-square-foot building sits on 12 acres. It is near The Catholic University of America. It is also close to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
The main church received a 3600 square foot addition. It accommodates a 500-seat church space and a 50-seat reliquary chapel. The marble altar weighs 9000 pounds. It was fabricated in Italy.
Visitors can attend various events. There are men’s retreats and rosaries for mothers. The shrine also hosts events for young adults. These include World Youth Day Unite and evenings with the Merciful Jesus.
The Saint John Paul II National Shrine continues to be a place of prayer. It preserves the legacy of a great Pope. Despite controversies surrounding some of its art, it remains a significant pilgrimage site. It offers spiritual enrichment to all who visit. The Knights of Columbus sponsor the Shrine.
