“Did you know that Pope Francis Catholic School wasn’t always called that?” I ask. This building you see before you holds a rich history. Pope Francis Catholic School stands proudly on Ossington Avenue. It’s a testament to the merging of two vibrant communities. Senhor Santo Cristo Catholic School and St. Luke Catholic School joined forces in 2016. Their legacy lives on within these walls.

Senhor Santo Cristo had a unique history. Its name honored a centuries-old Portuguese feast. The school was known for its exceptional facilities. A large gymnasium a library and spacious classrooms made it a special place. Many students were recent arrivals to Canada. Others were born in Canada but still had ties to their heritage. The school also hosted the Niagara Faculty of Education. Teacher candidates worked alongside the school’s staff.

St. Luke’s story is equally compelling. Opened in 1973 it welcomed many Catholic immigrants. Initially serving Italian and Portuguese families it quickly outgrew its portable classroom unit. A new building was constructed with impressive features such as a double gym and specialized science and technology rooms. Its growth was phenomenal. More portable classrooms were added to accommodate the expanding student population.

The coming together of these two schools created something new something special. The decision to name the school Pope Francis Catholic School was made by families from both communities. The Toronto Catholic District School Board approved the name. Pope Francis himself represents a historic moment in the Catholic Church. He is the first Jesuit pope the first from the Americas and the first non-European pope in centuries. His name chosen to honor Saint Francis of Assisi is symbolic.

Pope Francis Catholic School now serves a diverse student body. It continues to build on the rich traditions and legacies of Senhor Santo Cristo and St. Luke. It stands as a symbol of unity and community. A place where students learn and grow within a warm and welcoming environment. This school reflects the vibrant history of Toronto itself. The stories of these walls continue to unfold.
