Across the Po River, the magnificent Ponte Vittorio Emanuele Primo stands as a testament to Turin’s rich history. It’s not just a bridge; it’s a survivor, a witness to changing empires and a keeper of secrets. Ponte Vittorio Emanuele Primo is the oldest surviving bridge in Turin. It also holds the title of the most beautiful and most important. Originally, a simple wooden bridge crossed the Po at this vital point, constantly needing repairs. Imagine the constant work involved in maintaining such a crucial crossing. In 1404, under the direction of Pope Martin V, a stone bridge replaced the old wooden one. However, this too fell victim to time and disaster, destroyed by a flood in 1706. Turin was under Napoleon’s control at the time. He, seeing the strategic importance, ordered the construction of a new bridge. French engineer Claude-Yves La Ramée Pertinchamp designed the Ponte Vittorio Emanuele Primo. Construction began in 1810, after the remnants of the old bridge were cleared away. Frenchman Charles Mallet and Turin engineer Pellegrini oversaw the project. The bridge was completed in 1813, a symbol of French engineering prowess. When Napoleon fell, there were calls to demolish the bridge, a reminder of the occupation. However, King Vittorio Emanuele I intervened, saving the bridge and earning its name. Ponte Vittorio Emanuele Primo, a five-arched stone giant, stretches 150 meters long and nearly 13 meters wide. It has withstood countless floods, a testament to its solid construction. A hidden treasure lies within its central column: 88 commemorative coins and medals from Napoleon’s campaigns, along with a silver ingot, placed there during construction. They whisper tales of ambition and conquest. In 1876, tram lines were added and the sidewalks refurbished, bringing the Ponte Vittorio Emanuele Primo into the modern age. In 2002, artful lighting illuminated the bridge, enhancing its beauty for all to admire. Ponte Vittorio Emanuele Primo connects Turin’s historical and administrative centers with the Borgo Po area, standing between Vittorio Veneto Square and Gran Madre di Dio Square. As you stand here, admiring its grandeur, remember the stories it holds. From Napoleon’s ambition to Vittorio Emanuele I’s wisdom, the Ponte Vittorio Emanuele Primo has witnessed the ebb and flow of history.
