Gazing across the waters, can you envision three sestieri converging at a single point? Here at Ponte Vinanti, that very vision becomes reality. Ponte Vinanti, also known as “Ponte delle Gomme,” acts as a nexus between Dorsoduro, San Polo, and Santa Croce. The bridge’s name, Ponte Vinanti, comes from a former resident, Zandonà Vinanti, who lived near the bridge in the 18th century. He held the position of “nodaro al M. del Proprio.” His family, involved in the leather trade, had a long history with the local church of San Pantaleone. Another name, “Ponte delle Gomme,” might surprise you. It translates to “Bridge of Chewing Gum”. This playful moniker arose from the rather unusual local habit of sticking chewed gum on the plaster above the sottoportego. Although cleaned regularly, the tradition seems to stubbornly persist. From the center of Ponte Vinanti, the view unfolds like a Venetian tapestry. Look to your right, and Dorsoduro stretches out before you. Directly ahead lies San Polo, and to your left, the charming sestiere of Santa Croce completes the panorama. This unique vantage point offers a glimpse into the heart of Venice. It showcases its intricate network of canals and the rich history embedded within its very stones.
