Across the Rio Tietê stood Ponte Grande a testament to São Paulo’s colonial past. Built around 1700 it was São Paulo’s first engineering marvel. Imagine bandeirantes and indigenous workers toiling on its construction. Many were forced laborers under the brutal system of compulsory work.

Ponte Grande wasn’t just a bridge. It was a vital artery. It connected the Luz neighborhood with the vast Fazenda de Sant’Ana. This was the Colegio de São Paulo’s main suburban farm. Merchants and travelers crossed it transporting sugar gold tobacco and cattle.

The bridge itself was remarkably sturdy. It used local materials like stone and wood. Later iron castings were added to the stone pillars. This robust design carried heavy carts people and animals for centuries. The river itself was then known as the Rio Guaré. Ponte Grande spurred development in the northern lands beyond the Tietê.

Its strategic location facilitated trade and travel. It was part of the main thoroughfare connecting São Paulo to distant towns. Think of the “Road to Bragança” now Rua Voluntários da Pátria. Ponte Grande housed more than just pathways. It once held a unique astronomical observatory. This was supposedly São Paulo’s first observatory. It was built between 1865 and 1870. Sadly it was demolished in the late 1930s. There was also an Indigenous Museum on the bridge.

The Ponte Grande area was popular. It was a riverside haven for leisure and sports. The “São Paulo Crossing by Swimming” competition began there in 1924. It ended near the Esperia Club. The race was five and a half kilometers long. It attracted over 1900 athletes. This event continued until 1944 when pollution severely affected the river. Fans of rowing clubs like Regatas Tietê and Esperia watched from Ponte Grande.

By 1940 Ponte Grande was outdated. It couldn’t handle the city’s growing traffic. The Tietê river’s course was also being straightened. The bridge was demolished. It was replaced by the current Ponte das Bandeiras. President Getúlio Vargas and Mayor Francisco Prestes Maia attended its inauguration on January 25 1942. This new bridge was a concrete arch structure. The development of the Marginal Tietê in the late 1960s and early 1970s changed everything. Rowing moved to USP’s Olympic Rowing Course. A farewell regatta on the Tietê was held in 1970. The memory of Ponte Grande lives on in stories and photographs. It’s a reminder of São Paulo’s evolution from a colonial settlement to a sprawling metropolis.
