Can you feel the wind whipping through your hair as you stand on the Ponte della Libertà? It’s a feeling you’ll never forget. The Ponte della Libertà, or Liberty Bridge, is more than just a way to get from Venice to the mainland. It is a grand symbol. The bridge, designed by engineer Eugenio Miozzi, was officially opened in 1933 by Benito Mussolini. It was originally called Ponte Littorio, a name often used for bridges during the Fascist era. After World War II, the bridge was renamed Ponte della Libertà, signifying the end of the Fascist dictatorship and the Nazi occupation. The change of name reflected a desire for freedom. The Ponte della Libertà, at almost 4 kilometers long, is the only road access to Venice’s historic centre. Its two lanes carry not only cars but also trams, and on one side runs a dedicated pedestrian and cycle path. This bridge links you to Venetian history and a grand era. It offers a unique and captivating view of Venice and its surrounding lagoon. As you glance at the bridge and its iconic archways, imagine the history unfolding before your very eyes. It connects the old and the new, the historical centre of Venice with the mainland, representing a bridge between eras. This is where Venice whispers its secrets and the Ponte della Libertà acts as the bridge between the city and the world.
