Across the Ill River stands Pont Royal. Its elegant form belies a rich and often turbulent history. This isn’t just a bridge. It’s a silent witness to centuries of Strasbourg’s evolution.

Originally built in the 15th century Pont Royal stood outside the city walls. Two imposing towers guarded its approaches. A wooden barrier completed the structure. A passage allowed commercial ships to pass even during wartime.

By 1670 this first bridge was replaced. A raised pedestrian walkway had a drawbridge in the center. This allowed river traffic to continue. Then in 1770 another upgrade. A wooden carriage bridge with two drawbridges at its ends was constructed. It was then that the bridge was given its current name: Pont Royal.

The year 1840 brought destruction and rebirth. A stone bridge with six arches replaced the aging wooden structure. Military engineers designed it to withstand fire and modern artillery. An iron portcullis could seal access during times of war. Yet the brick and concrete couldn’t prevent its destruction during the 1870 siege. German forces rebuilt it keeping the original six pillars. This was part of the Neustadt district’s expansion.

A complete reconstruction occurred between 1963 and 1965. It was the city’s first bridge designed using a computer. Its scale was unprecedented. In the year 2000 further changes happened. Pont Royal was completely reorganized to accommodate Strasbourg’s tram system.

Today Pont Royal connects Avenue de la Marseillaise to Boulevard de la Victoire. It links the university and Neustadt district to Krutenau. It’s not merely a passageway. It’s a symbol of Strasbourg’s resilience and its continuous adaptation through the ages. It’s a story written in stone and steel a legacy spanning centuries. And as you stand here today you’re part of that ongoing narrative.
