Across the gentle curve of the Canal du Faux-Rempart, the Pont de la Fonderie gracefully arches. This bridge isn’t just a path. It’s a portal to a fascinating blend of history, architecture, and local lore. The Pont de la Fonderie connects the bustling Fonderie district with the expanding Finkmatt quarter. It was officially opened in 1893. This bridge was designed by city architects Mr. Ott and Mr. Beutner. Its construction was likely influenced by the nearby Finkmatt military barracks. The Pont de la Fonderie stands out with its single, 24-meter-long arch. This design was a deliberate choice. Due to the canal’s curve, architects wanted to minimize water turbulence that a supporting pillar might create. Look closely at the bridge’s aesthetic details. They intentionally complement the surrounding landmarks. These landmarks are the Catholic Church of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune and the Palais de Justice. Notice the four pink granite lions. They stand guard at each corner of the Pont de la Fonderie. These lions earned the bridge its nickname, “Pudelbrücke,” or “Poodle Bridge.” This moniker reflects a certain local sentiment. It shows the complex relationship Strasbourg had with German influence during that era. The Pont de la Fonderie is thought to be the only bridge from the German occupation period. It is fully preserved in its original form in Strasbourg.
