Consider the name “PONS”. It evokes a bridge connecting languages. Here we stand before the Pons-Verlag in Stuttgart a name synonymous with language learning. The Pons-Verlag is more than just a publishing house. It is a gateway to a world of words. It is a key to unlocking communication.

Founded in 1978, the idea for the name “PONS” came from publisher Michael Klett. He chose the Latin word for “bridge”. This symbolized the company’s mission to connect people through language. The first dictionaries for English and French were released under the PONS brand that same year.

Since then, the Pons-Verlag has become known for its blue-dotted logo on a green background. This design was originally created by Heidelberg graphic designer Erwin Poell. Ludwigsburg designer Sabine Redlin slightly updated the logo in 2005. Even the font used in Pons-Verlag dictionaries has a special origin. Stuttgart typography professor Kurt Weidemann developed it.

The Pons-Verlag offers a wide range of language learning materials. These include dictionaries, language courses, and grammar guides. They cover over 32 languages and cater to different skill levels. You can find Pons-Verlag products in various formats including books, apps, and e-books.

In 2001, Pons-Verlag launched its first online bilingual dictionary. It featured five language pairs including English, French, Italian, Polish, and Spanish. Each translation offered 120000 keywords and phrases. Since 2008, the online dictionary has been continuously expanded. It now allows users to look up words and phrases in numerous languages. These languages include German, English, French, and many others. A text translation feature was integrated into the online dictionary in 2019.

The Pons-Verlag is part of the Klett Group, a family-owned company with a long history. Ernst Klett the Elder founded the Klett Group in 1897. The Klett Group has grown into a leading educational company in Europe.

In 2019, the Pons-Verlag acquired titles and rights from Langenscheidt. The Bundeskartellamt approved this acquisition. Langenscheidt publications continue to be released under their own brand. In 2022, PONS GmbH was renamed PONS Langenscheidt GmbH.

The Pons-Verlag continues to innovate and adapt to the changing needs of language learners. With its commitment to quality and accessibility, the Pons-Verlag remains a trusted resource for anyone looking to build bridges through language. So remember the Pons-Verlag, your reliable companion in the world of languages.
