Established in 1792 this Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery in Warsaw’s Wola district holds a significant place in Polish history. More than just a burial ground it’s a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Warsaw.
Designed by Szymon Bogumił Zug a prominent Polish-German architect the cemetery has witnessed turbulent times. The Kosciuszko Uprising of 1794 saw intense fighting here. World War II brought further devastation. The cemetery itself became a battlefield. Buildings and monuments crumbled.
Yet life endures. The neoclassical Halpert family chapel rebuilt in 1975 stands as a symbol of this resilience. It serves the Lutheran community to this day. Many historic tombstones however remain in need of restoration. A committee works tirelessly to preserve this precious heritage. They collect donations on All Saints’ Day. Their hope is to return these treasures to their former glory.
Among the notable buried here is Juliusz Bursche a bishop who bravely opposed Nazi Germany. He was arrested tortured and died in Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Then there is Wojciech Gerson a renowned Polish painter and professor. Samuel Linde a linguist librarian and lexicographer also rests here. His work shaped the Polish language itself. Many prominent figures of Polish industry including Karol Ernest Wedel founder of the famous chocolate company are buried here. This cemetery is a veritable pantheon of Warsaw’s industrialists financiers and entrepreneurs. Even Wiesław Wernic the popular Polish writer known for his Wild West books is here.
