“A chilling wind whispers through the metal cross.” This is the Pomnik Więżniów Obozu NKWD in Rembertów. We stand before a monument a solemn reminder of a dark chapter in history. This memorial commemorates the prisoners of NKVD Special Camp Number 10. This camp operated from 1944 to 1945. It was located within the former Pocisk Ammunition Factory. The factory buildings now lie in ruins.

The NKVD established the camp. It housed soldiers from the Home Army and the National Military Organization. Other prisoners included those deemed enemies of the state. In the night of May 20-21 1945 something remarkable happened. A daring raid freed over 500 prisoners. This act of bravery was carried out by a 44-man Home Army unit. Their leader was Second Lieutenant Edward Wasilewski known as Wichura.

The monument itself is a powerful symbol. It features plaques bearing inscriptions. They honor the victims of Camp Number 10. These prisoners were soldiers and activists of the Polish Underground State. Their remains rest beneath the ground here. Some were murdered here others perished elsewhere in the vast Soviet empire. Another plaque remembers the soldiers of the Home Army’s Mewa-Kamień unit. They risked their lives to liberate these prisoners stopping the mass deportations to the East.

The Pomnik Więżniów Obozu NKWD stands as a stark reminder. It reminds us of the suffering inflicted under the Soviet regime. The site now also contains a single grave. It lies within the grounds of the 2nd Regional Logistics Base. The grave holds the remains of an unidentified individual. There is little remaining documentation from the camp’s era. The base does have a small museum. It features a reconstructed plan of the camp.

This is more than just a place of remembrance. It is a testament to resilience in the face of oppression. This monument reminds us of the sacrifices made. We remember the prisoners their suffering and those who bravely fought for their freedom. The Pomnik Więżniów Obozu NKWD remains a poignant tribute. It serves as a beacon urging us to remember the past and prevent similar atrocities from ever happening again. Let us stand together in silent respect. Let us never forget.
