“Barikáda Praha” reads the inscription. This phrase marks the Pomník obětem 2. světové války. It stands as a poignant reminder of World War II’s impact on Prague.

Here at Náměstí Hrdinů 1300/11, the memorial honors those who perished. The Pomník obětem 2. světové války serves as a solemn testament to the cost of freedom.

Several plaques and memorials compose this tribute. Each tells a fragment of Prague’s wartime experience. One plaque is dedicated to Karel Hopjan who fell here in May 1945. Another lists names of those who laid down their lives for their country. They include Dr. Beck Bedřich, Marie Čechurová, and Dr. Lány Emil. These individuals represent a cross-section of Czech society.

The Pomník obětem 2. světové války is registered in the Central Register of War Graves. Its coordinates are N50°3’22.54” E14°26’4.67”. This ensures its preservation as a site of historical importance.

Another memorial stands at Náměstí Hrdinů, near the tram depot. It honors heroes who sacrificed their lives. Names like Vladimír Cílek and Antonín Císař are inscribed. These were ordinary citizens who became heroes. They died during the Prague Uprising in May 1945.

The inscription “Čest Našim Hrdinům, Mučedníkům. Nezapomenem!” which translates to “Honor to Our Heroes, Martyrs. We will not forget!” This sentiment encapsulates the purpose of the Pomník obětem 2. světové války.

Vladimír Cílek, a driver for the Electric Company, died near the Pankrác tram depot. Antonín Mareš, a bus driver, succumbed to injuries. Oldřich Říha, another bus driver, fell on Děkanka. Karel Secký, a driver, died in Pankrác. Josef Šrámek, an Electric Company employee, was killed near Nad Jezerkou.

These memorials remind us of individual sacrifices. They highlight the collective suffering of Prague during the war.

In Nedvědovo náměstí, another Pomník obětem 2. světové války exists. During renovations in 2024, human remains were discovered near the school. These bones were from fallen defenders of Prague buried there in May 1945.

In 1946, a memorial was erected for those who fell in Podolí. In 1959, the remains were exhumed. However, not all remains were recovered at that time.

The memorial was funded by the mother of Dušan Pšenčík, a fallen student. His gravestone in Olšany Cemetery is a smaller version of this memorial.

Twenty-seven fighters were originally buried in a mass grave. Later, their remains were moved to cemeteries in Braník and Olšany.

Today, the Pomník obětem 2. světové války stands as a place for reflection. It serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict. It encourages us to remember and honor those who fought for freedom. As you leave, take a moment to reflect on the stories etched in stone. Remember the names, the sacrifices, and the enduring spirit of Prague.
