How about we pause for a moment to admire the bronze figure before us? This is the Pomnik Juliusza Słowackiego Statue. It stands here as a tribute to one of Poland’s greatest romantic poets.

The statue’s story is quite interesting. The idea for a monument to Juliusz Słowacki first emerged in 1932. Edward Wittig sculpted a model with the intention of placing it in Lviv. Sadly, the outbreak of World War II prevented its installation. The plaster model survived the war. The National Museum in Warsaw safeguarded it in the Old Orangery in Łazienki Park.

Fast forward to 2001. The monument to Juliusz Słowacki was finally erected on Bank Square. It stands where a monument to Felix Dzierżyński once stood. The Dzierżyński monument was removed in 1989. The erection of Juliusz Słowacki’s statue marked a symbolic shift.

The act of erecting the Pomnik Juliusza Słowackiego was a significant event. The foundation act was signed at the Presidential Palace on March 28, 2001. Pope John Paul II had previously signed the document. President Aleksander Kwaśniewski established an Honorary Committee for the Construction of the Juliusz Słowacki Monument in Warsaw during the ceremony.

The statue itself is a bronze cast. It is based on Wittig’s pre-war plaster model. The figure of the poet stands on a high base. The monument is five meters high and weighs 2.5 tons.

Juliusz Słowacki was a prominent figure of the Romantic era. Alongside Adam Mickiewicz and Zygmunt Krasiński, he is considered one of the “bards”. He is known for works such as “Kordian,” “Balladyna,” “Beniowski,” and “Agamemnon’s Grave.” His writings often explored themes of patriotism. They also reflected revolutionary perseverance. Many of his works address the defeat of the November Uprising. They also deal with the fate of Polish exiles.

The location of the Pomnik Juliusza Słowackiego is also significant. After completing his law studies, Słowacki worked in the Government Commission of Revenue and Treasury. This was the equivalent of today’s Ministry of Finance. It was located in the current town hall.

President Aleksander Kwaśniewski highlighted the importance of honoring poets. He said that by building monuments to poets we mobilize ourselves. We attach importance to the best aspects of humanity and our patriotism. Cardinal Józef Glemp prayed that the monument would remind people of the values by which the nation should live. He hoped that we would guard truth and wisdom in our hearts.

The Pomnik Juliusza Słowackiego serves as a reminder of Słowacki’s contribution to Polish literature. His work continues to inspire. It stands as a living source of ideological and artistic inspiration. This statue connects us to the rich cultural heritage of Poland. It encourages us to reflect on the power of poetry and its ability to shape national identity.
