This monument in Warsaw is dedicated to Marshal Józef Piłsudski a pivotal figure in Poland’s history. He played a key role in Poland regaining its independence in 1918 after 123 years of partition. He served as the Chief of State and Minister of Military Affairs. A true national hero.
The Pomnik Józefa Piłsudskiego Obelisk stands in Piłsudski Square formerly known as Victory Square. This square has witnessed countless historical events. The obelisk itself was unveiled on August 15 1995 the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw. It commemorates Piłsudski’s leadership in the 1920 victory over the Bolshevik army. This victory during the Polish-Soviet War is often called the Miracle on the Vistula.
The statue depicts Marshal Piłsudski on horseback. This symbolizes his military prowess and leadership. Polish sculptor Tadeusz Łodziana created this masterpiece. Interestingly the monument you see today isn’t the original. A different version was created by Stanisław Ostrowski and displayed at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. That’s a fascinating detail isn’t it? The original was kept by the Józef Piłsudski Institute of America after the war.
