Beyond the bustling streets of São Paulo lies a story of order and security, embodied by the Polícia Militar. What if I told you this institution, responsible for the safety of millions, began with just 130 men? The Polícia Militar, right here before us, traces its roots back to December 15, 1831. On that day, the Corpo de Guardas Municipais Permanentes was formed. It consisted of 100 foot patrolmen and 30 mounted officers, the original “130 of ’31.” They were the seeds of what would grow into the largest police force in Brazil. The Polícia Militar is more than just a modern force. It’s woven into the very fabric of São Paulo’s history. In the turbulent times of the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932, the Polícia Militar stood as a vital part of the revolutionary army. With just 10,000 men, they represented the heart of São Paulo’s resistance. The evolution of the Polícia Militar mirrors the growth of São Paulo itself. The force expanded from its humble beginnings to become a sophisticated organization. The modern Polícia Militar boasts over 82,500 officers, a fleet of 28 aircraft, two combat ships, and numerous vehicles. They patrol not just the bustling streets of this metropolis, but also the vast expanse of São Paulo state, encompassing 645 municipalities. Its jurisdiction stretches across a diverse landscape. Its duties range from urban policing to environmental protection. The Polícia Militar we see today is a product of mergers and reorganizations. In 1970, the Força Pública combined with the Guarda Civil. This union formed the institution as we now know it, the Polícia Militar. This fusion brought together different traditions and expertise. It created a unified force capable of addressing the complex security needs of a sprawling state. From the Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (ROTA), known for their tactical prowess, to the Grupamento de Radiopatrulha A’erea (GRPAe), patrolling the skies above, the Polícia Militar has diversified to meet every challenge. As you stand before this building, remember, you’re not just looking at a police station. You’re witnessing a vital piece of São Paulo’s past and present. The Polícia Militar, with its long and complex history, continues to strive towards its mission. Its mission is to maintain order and protect the citizens of São Paulo.
