Point Howard, located on the north-eastern side of Wellington Harbour, served its purpose well. Oil was a precious commodity, and the Point Howard Wharf was a lifeline for the city and its surrounding industries. You can still see remnants of the wharf, a testament to a bygone era of industry. From the late 1920s, when the Texas Oil Company built its first oil tanks in the area, until the opening of Seaview Wharf in 1979, the Point Howard Wharf saw huge tankers, including the largest oil tanker to visit New Zealand, come and go. However, times changed, and so did the wharf’s purpose. Today, it’s a popular spot for fishing and enjoying the harbour views. There are no more tankers, just seagulls and eager anglers hoping to catch the next big catch.
