How about a journey to a place where serenity meets the sky? That place is the Po Lin Monastery. This Buddhist sanctuary sits atop the Ngong Ping Plateau on Lantau Island. It offers both spiritual solace and stunning views.

The Po Lin Monastery’s story began in 1906. Three monks from Jiangsu Province sought a peaceful place for meditation. Initially, it was humbly known as “The Big Hut”. In 1924, it received its current name. Po Lin translates to “Precious Lotus Zen Temple”.

Inside the main temple, three bronze Buddha statues represent different facets of existence. They embody the past, present, and future. These figures radiate calm, inviting contemplation. Buddhist scriptures fill the temple. They offer wisdom to those who seek it. If luck is on your side, you might even witness a traditional ceremony performed by the monks.

The Tian Tan Buddha is an unmissable sight. Completed in 1993, this giant statue extends the monastery’s spiritual presence. It is a representation of Amitabha. To reach enlightenment, you must climb 268 steps. The statue faces towards Beijing and bestows calm. The base of the Tian Tan Buddha is modeled after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.

Wooden bracelets are available near the Tian Tan Buddha statue. They serve as reminders of peace found here at Po Lin Monastery. They are a unique memento of your visit.

Getting here is part of the adventure. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car offers breathtaking views. The 25-minute ride showcases the sea, mountains, and Hong Kong’s skyline. The views make the ride a memorable experience. Alternatively, bus line 23 offers a more economical journey.

The monastery is open daily, welcoming visitors from 10 am to 5:45 pm. Entrance to the Po Lin Monastery is free. This allows everyone to experience its beauty.

Take a moment to breathe deeply. Feel the tranquility that permeates the Po Lin Monastery. Let the serene atmosphere calm your mind. Remember the teachings of the Buddha. Carry the peace of this sacred place with you always.
