In the pre-dawn hours of September 16th, 1944, picture this very spot. The Płyta Desantu 3 Dywizji Piechoty I Armii WP War memorial stands as a stark reminder of the bravery displayed here. Around 4 am, under a hail of German gunfire, the first group of about 60 soldiers from the 9th Infantry Regiment of the Polish 3rd Infantry Division landed nearby. They came ashore near Wilanowska Street, desperate to aid the Warsaw Uprising. This was just the first of three daring nighttime landings that would take place. The soldiers, part of the 1st Army of the Polish Armed Forces, arrived in waves throughout the nights of September 16th to 18th. This memorial, a simple yet powerful stone slab, pays tribute to the 2,056 soldiers and officers who lost their lives fighting for a free Poland. They fought alongside the courageous resistance fighters of the Home Army units “Radosław” and “Kryska”. They fought with valor against overwhelming odds. Their sacrifice serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Polish people.
