Ever wondered what it’s like to walk on a beach consistently ranked among the world’s best? Here at Playa de Varadero, also known as Playa Azul, you can experience it firsthand. Playa de Varadero isn’t just any beach. It’s a stunning 20-kilometer stretch of white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water located on the Hicacos Peninsula in Matanzas, Cuba. TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards has recognized Playa de Varadero’s beauty, placing it among the top beaches globally, even reaching number 9 in January 2024. Imagine sinking your toes into this fine sand, the warm Cuban sun on your skin, and the gentle rhythm of the waves washing ashore.

Playa de Varadero is more than just a beautiful beach. It’s a place steeped in history. Originally used as a dry dock, its name, “Varadero,” actually reflects this historical function. The peninsula’s salt mines, active until 1961, played a crucial role in supplying the Spanish Latin America Fleet from as early as 1587. The official founding of Varadero as a city, however, didn’t occur until December 5, 1887, when ten families from Cárdenas received permission to build vacation homes here. This marked the beginning of Varadero’s transformation into the vibrant resort town it is today.

Over the years, Playa de Varadero evolved from an elite resort in the 1870s to a bustling hub for both Cuban and international tourists. After the Cuban Revolution, many mansions were nationalized, becoming museums that offer a glimpse into the peninsula’s opulent past. The Parque de las 8000 Taquillas, built in 1960, became a symbol of integrated tourism, providing a shared space for visitors of all backgrounds. From the 1960s to the 1980s, this park became a cultural center, hosting concerts, festivals, and sporting events. Today, Playa de Varadero boasts over 52 hotels, many operated by international companies, attracting a record 1.7 million foreign tourists in 2017.

While relaxing on the beach is a must, Playa de Varadero offers many activities. From catamaran cruises to snorkeling, diving amongst vibrant coral reefs, and exploring nearby caves such as the Cueva de Ambrosio with its ancient indigenous drawings. The warm tropical climate makes it an ideal destination year-round. However, keep in mind hurricane season, which runs from June 1st to November 15th. September and October are the peak months for potential hurricanes, something to consider when planning your visit.

Playa de Varadero, the jewel of Cuba’s coast, is more than a beach. It is a blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and captivating history. So, as you stand here, on the edge of Playa Azul, take a moment to appreciate the sand between your toes, the sun on your face, and the stories whispered by the waves. This is Playa de Varadero, a destination that leaves an imprint on the heart, inviting you to return time and time again.
