Isn’t it amazing how a simple idea can bubble into something truly iconic? Here at Pivovar Staropramen, that’s precisely what happened. This brewery stands as the second largest in the Czech Republic. Its story began back in 1869.

Shares for a “Joint Stock Brewery in Smíchov” went on sale. By 1871, the brewery building was complete, and the first Staropramen beer was brewed. But competition was fierce among Prague breweries. So, in 1911, the name Staropramen was registered. It translates to “old spring”.

After World War I, the brewery experienced significant growth. By the 1930s, Staropramen became the largest brewery in Czechoslovakia. Then came World War II and communist rule. All Czechoslovakian breweries were nationalized. Yet, Staropramen maintained its high standards.

After communism ended in 1989, things changed again. In 1992, the brewery became part of the Prague Breweries group. By 1996, the Bass company took control. Later, in 2000, Bass sold its brewing operations to Interbrew. This later merged with AmBev to form Inbev.

Staropramen continued to grow. Today it holds a significant share of the Czech beer market. In 2009, a private equity fund named CVC Capital Partners bought Anheuser-Busch InBev’s holdings in Central Europe. They renamed the operations StarBev. Then, in 2012, Molson Coors bought StarBev.

Did you know that Emperor Franz Josef I visited Staropramen in 1880? He praised the Smíchov brew. He even signed the brewery guestbook in Czech.

Staropramen offers a range of beers. These include Staropramen Smíchov. It is a pale draught beer. There is also Staropramen Ležák. This is the premium pale lager. For those who prefer darker beers, there’s Staropramen Černý. It is a dark beer. Each offers a unique taste of Czech brewing tradition.

Besides its classic brews, Staropramen innovates. They created Staropramen Cool Lemon. It is a beer with lemon flavor.

Staropramen’s reach extends beyond the Czech Republic. Its beers are produced under license in other European countries. This includes Serbia, Croatia, Romania, and Georgia. The brewery has come a long way. It started with a vision. Now, it is a global symbol of Czech brewing excellence.

So, the next time you enjoy a Staropramen, remember its rich history. From its humble beginnings to its current status. It is the story of Czech brewing tradition. It is also a legacy of quality and innovation. Staropramen remains a beloved symbol of Prague. Its beer continues to be enjoyed around the world.
