Fifty-four Olympic-sized swimming pools. That’s the capacity of the Piscinão RM-5. Can you imagine?
The Piscinão RM-5 isn’t just any swimming pool. It’s a massive underground reservoir. It’s designed to combat flooding in the bustling Vila Prudente area of São Paulo. This incredible feat of engineering sits near the intersection of Avenida Professor Luiz Inácio de Anhaia Mello and Avenida Jacinto Menezes Palhares. It’s built on the site of the former Artur Friedenreich Educational and Sports Center. Now a modern marvel stands in its place.
Before the Piscinão RM-5 the Córrego Mooca overflowed during rainy seasons. Flooding plagued Avenida Professor Luiz Inácio de Anhaia Mello and nearby streets. The water had nowhere to go. The old drainage system couldn’t cope. But now things are different.
The Piscinão RM-5 is a game changer. With its 13800 square meters of area and 15-meter depth it can hold 134500 cubic meters of water. That’s enough to significantly reduce flooding in the area. This colossal project involved a massive investment of R$166.6 million. It’s a testament to São Paulo’s commitment to improving its infrastructure and protecting its citizens.
Construction took about 35 months. Twenty-three months were spent on building the reservoir itself. Twelve months were allocated for assisted operation of the newly constructed Piscinão RM-5. After completion the existing sports facilities. including the soccer field and running track. were rebuilt. They seamlessly integrate with the Piscinão RM-5. You’d hardly notice it’s there.
The Piscinão RM-5 is more than just a solution to flooding. It’s a symbol of resilience. It showcases São Paulo’s dedication to improving the lives of its residents. It’s a reminder that even in a city as vast and complex as São Paulo progress is possible. A tangible demonstration of a brighter future for Vila Prudente. A future free from the threat of devastating floods. The Piscinão RM-5 is a silent guardian a testament to human ingenuity. A structure that quietly protects this vibrant neighborhood.
