Can you imagine a time when Pipitea, this bustling suburb of Wellington, was a pristine beach? Before the arrival of European settlers, Pipitea was a place of abundant seafood, lush fern-covered land, and dense forests teeming with life. The Pipitea Stream flowed freely across the land, and the indigenous Māori tribe, Ngāti Ira, thrived on the abundant resources of the area. The Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Mutunga were the first recorded residents of Pipitea, establishing their homes and gardens along the waterfront. However, conflict and migration patterns led to the arrival of Te Āti Awa in the 1830s, who became the dominant tribe in the region. Pipitea then became home to Te Matehou, a sub-tribe under Te Ropiha. In 1840, the landscape of Pipitea changed dramatically with the arrival of British settlers. The New Zealand Company, under the leadership of William Wakefield, claimed to have purchased the land, although this was disputed by the Māori tribes. The settlement, initially established in Petone, was relocated to Pipitea after a series of devastating storms. The area was renamed Thorndon and the land was divided into sections, displacing many of the Māori inhabitants. Despite initial economic benefits from trade with the settlers, the Māori way of life was gradually eroded. The expanding town encroached upon traditional food sources and by 1860, the Māori population had dwindled, with many relocating to Waiwhetu. By 1881, only a handful of Māori residents remained in Pipitea, marking a significant shift in the cultural landscape of this once-thriving Māori settlement.
