Originally known as Filmport, Pinewood Toronto Studios stands as the largest film and television studio complex in Canada. It’s the first in Toronto equipped to handle large-scale film productions, a game-changer for the city’s film scene. Located across the shipping channel from Hearn Generating Station, Pinewood Toronto Studios sits on a significant piece of Toronto’s history. The 11-hectare site boasts a remarkable journey. It began in 2006 on a former industrial brownfield, demanding extensive cleanup before its transformation. In 2009, a partnership with the UK’s Pinewood Studios Group led to the studio’s renaming and a surge in international recognition. Pinewood Toronto Studios prides itself on its green initiatives, a testament to its commitment to sustainable filmmaking. In 2018, Bell Media acquired a controlling stake, further solidifying its prominent role in the industry. This acquisition spurred a massive expansion, adding 170,000 square feet of sound stages. This expansion addressed the growing demand for production space in Toronto. Pinewood Toronto Studios houses seven purpose-built sound stages and a converted warehouse. These range from a respectable 10,000 to an impressive 46,000 square feet. The Mega Stage, the largest of these, held the title of North America’s largest purpose-built sound stage until 2016.
