High above Hong Kong’s bustling cityscape, remnants of a forgotten war lie hidden. Pinewood Battery, perched atop Victoria Peak, stands as a silent testament to a turbulent past. Completed in 1905, Pinewood Battery was initially designed to protect the western harbor. However, it found a new purpose as an anti-aircraft battery during World War II. The Pinewood Battery Heritage Trail meanders through Lung Fu Shan Country Park. It offers a glimpse into this historic site. The trail is a relatively easy 2.3-kilometer hike, taking roughly 20 to 40 minutes. You can access it from Victoria Peak or Kennedy Town. But the most convenient starting point is from Victoria Peak. Originally part of the Lung Fu Shan Fitness Trail, this 400-meter section now stands alone. It features eight informative display boards that chronicle the Battery’s 100-year military history, drawing on information gathered both locally and overseas. Pinewood Battery played a critical role during the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941. Manned by the 17th AA Battery, 5th Anti-Air Regiment of the Royal Artillery, it endured relentless Japanese air raids. On December 15th, a devastating attack caused significant damage, casualties, and ultimately led to the Battery’s abandonment. Today, the ruins of Pinewood Battery offer a poignant reminder of this conflict. While time and nature have taken their toll, the resilience of the structures is evident. The gun battery, magazines, and observation post still stand. They are a tribute to the brave soldiers who defended Hong Kong. As you explore the site, imagine the deafening roar of anti-aircraft guns and the chaos of war. The echoes of history resonate here, reminding us of the sacrifices made. Pinewood Battery is more than just a historical site; it is a place for reflection. It’s a place where you can connect with Hong Kong’s rich and complex past while enjoying stunning urban views.
