Barnett Levey’s dream crumbled before his eyes. The Pilgrim Inn, once a beacon of hospitality in Blaxland, was reduced to ashes in the devastating bushfires of 1968. Today, as we stand here, we can only imagine the bustling inn that once stood on this very spot. The Pilgrim Inn was more than just a resting place for weary travellers. It was a symbol of Barnett Levey’s ambition. Built on his first land grant, the inn marked his arrival and his stake in the growing colony. It was a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit. He envisioned a place where people could gather, share stories, and find comfort after a long journey. The inn’s story continued beyond Levey’s ownership. In 1860, it was sold at auction, transitioning from a public house to a private home. For a century, it served as a family residence, witnessing the changing times and the evolution of the surrounding community. While the inn itself is no more, its legacy persists in the memories of those who knew it and in the historical records that document its existence. Behind the present-day McDonalds Family Restaurant, the remnants of the Pilgrim Inn’s walls still stand. These ruins serve as a poignant reminder of the inn’s vibrant past, a silent echo of laughter, conversations, and the clinking of glasses. The Pilgrim Inn may be gone, but its story remains, woven into the fabric of Blaxland’s history.
