Was Pile Gate always this accessible? This magnificent structure, the grandest entrance in Dubrovnik’s city walls, once relied on a different kind of accessibility. Imagine, if you will, the year 1537. The newly built Pile Gate stands as a formidable guardian, its imposing stonework a testament to Dubrovnik’s enduring strength. But what truly controlled the flow of life in and out of this city was its wooden drawbridge. Every evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, the townspeople would gather as the drawbridge was ceremoniously raised. Pile Gate became a symbol of impenetrable security, its massive wooden arm drawn up, effectively sealing the city off from the outside world. Today, that very drawbridge is gone, replaced by a sturdy stone passage. It serves as a reminder of Dubrovnik’s evolution – from a city on constant guard to a welcoming destination. However, traces of the past are visible if you look closely. On either side of the gate, you can still see the mechanical counterweights used to raise and lower that ancient drawbridge. They stand as silent sentinels, whispering tales of a time when Pile Gate served as more than just a passageway. It was a guardian, a protector, and a symbol of a city that valued its independence above all else.
