Perhaps you’ve heard tales of cities brought to their knees by relentless plagues. Today, before us stands Gospa od zdravlja. It stands as a testament to faith amidst despair. It is a beacon of hope born from a city’s desperate plea.

The story of Gospa od zdravlja extends beyond Dubrovnik. On November 21st, the Church also celebrates the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This day is twinned with the Gospa od zdravlja. It amplifies the joy and hope.
Legend says that when Mary was a child, she was taken to the temple in Jerusalem. According to these stories, Mary ascended fifteen steps to the entrance of the temple unaided. Angels brought her food. These apocryphal writings emphasize Mary’s grace from birth. They highlight her destiny as the Mother of God.
God prepared Mary’s body. It became a temple for His Son. She was set apart for the great task of human salvation. The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates this feast on the same day. This shows the shared roots of the Catholic and Orthodox churches.
In essence, Gospa od zdravlja reminds us of the intertwined threads of faith. It links us to Venice’s desperate hour. It connects us to Mary’s presentation in the temple.
