What whispers of creativity echo within these walls? Here at Piggery Lane Studio, the air hums with artistic energy. Piggery Lane Studio isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the Hawkesbury Agricultural College’s vibrant past. In the early 1900s, this very spot, then known as “The Piggery” and “Piggery Lane,” bustled with agricultural activity. Imagine the sights and sounds of a working farm. Now, fast forward to 1978. The Hawkesbury Community Arts Workshop transformed this historic building, now designated D9 on Campus Drive, into a haven for artists. Piggery Lane Studio became home to six talented artists. They are Kym Morris, Jenny Lloyd, Marian Wilcox, Malcolm Robertson, Sharron Whittington, and Shelley Whittington. Their work reflects the unique beauty of the surrounding area. They work with a diverse range of styles, mediums, and subject matter. You can find their artwork displayed in the studio’s gallery. A rather unique event occurred here in 2014. Bees had taken up residence in the walls of the Piggery. Sharron, a former beekeeper, along with some friends, carefully removed the bees. They split them into two hives. One hive found a new home elsewhere, while the other stayed on the grounds, benefiting the Earthcare project. The artists at Piggery Lane Studio also actively engage with the community. They offer workshops, participate in local art events, and even partner with organizations like Earthcare. They’ve hosted workshops on figure drawing with charcoal, Zentangle, and even a “Walk and Draw” session where participants sketch the natural beauty of the area. Piggery Lane Studio opens its doors to the public every first Saturday of the month. It’s a chance to witness the creative spirit thriving within these historic walls. You can connect with the artists and experience the unique blend of history and art that defines Piggery Lane Studio. As you leave, carry with you the echoes of creativity. Remember the legacy of “The Piggery” transformed into a vibrant studio. This is a place where the past inspires the present, and the future is filled with artistic promise.
