What if the earth could speak? It would tell a chilling story right here at Pietní území Lidice. This place stands as a stark memorial. It commemorates a tragedy that shook the world.

Pietní území Lidice marks the spot where the village of Lidice once stood. The Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia had dire consequences for Lidice. In June 1942, Lidice was erased from the map. This act was a reprisal for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. He was a high-ranking Nazi official.

Let me paint you a picture. The date was June 10 1942. It was just after midnight. Nazi forces stormed into Lidice. They rounded up all 503 villagers. The men and boys over fifteen were separated. 173 Lidice men were shot. This happened in the garden of the Horak farm.

The women and children were taken to Kladno. Days later, the children were separated from their mothers. Some children were selected for German re-education. Babies under one year old were spared. The rest were murdered. They were poisoned by exhaust gas in Nazi extermination camp vehicles. The location was Chełmno in Poland. The women were sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp. This almost always meant death.

After ridding Lidice of its people, the Nazis destroyed the village. They torched houses. Then they used explosives to raze everything. They destroyed the church and even the cemetery. By 1943, nothing was left but an empty space. Notices forbade entry.

News of Lidice’s destruction spread fast. The Nazis aimed to wipe Lidice off the Earth. They failed. Villages worldwide adopted the name Lidice. Women born then were named Lidice too. Lidice lived on in people’s minds.

After the war, the Czechoslovak government rebuilt Lidice. A peace demonstration marked the decision. It was held on June 10 1945. Surviving Lidice women attended. 340 Lidice citizens were murdered. 143 Lidice women returned after the war. After a long search, 17 children were reunited with their mothers.

In 1947, the foundation stone of a new Lidice was laid. It was 300 meters from the original site. In May 1948, building began. Volunteers from across the Republic and abroad helped create a modern village. It had 150 houses. A council house, post office, culture house and shopping center were also built. The old site became a memorial. It includes the Lidice men’s common grave and a museum. A Garden of Peace and Friendship opened in 1955. Thousands of rose bushes from around the world were planted there.

Today, Pietní území Lidice serves as a powerful reminder. It embodies resilience. It stands against the horrors of war. It honors the lives lost. Take a moment to reflect on the past. Remember the importance of peace and understanding.
