Magic awaits as we approach Pheasants Cave. This isn’t just any cave. It’s a rainforest oasis hidden in Mount Wilson.
Pheasants Cave is a testament to nature’s artistry. The easy walk here offers spectacular mountain views. Giant overhangs line the path. It’s hard to believe a pristine rainforest lies below as we walk along the cliff tops.
This walk to Pheasants Cave is often quiet. You might find you have it all to yourself. This isolation only adds to the experience.
Our journey begins at Du Faurs Rocks. If parking is full you can park near the fire station. From Du Faurs Rocks a scenic lookout the trail starts on the left side of the road. Look for a pink cross painted on a tree stump. An obvious path marks the way.
The narrow sandy track takes us along the cliff top. This flat section stretches for about 230 meters. Enjoy the lovely scenic views.
The path descends a few stairs where the epic overhangs begin. The Blue Mountains boast great overhangs. These are truly remarkable. The flat path along the overhangs continues for 170 meters. Then we begin descending. Staircases lead down.
As the trail descends it becomes bushier. Arrows guide the way. At the 600-meter mark an arrow points right. This leads up a little dirt path with some loose soil.
Over the next 300 meters several signposts mark the way. At a junction follow the path straight on. Heading right loops back to the car park missing the cave.
Flannel flowers often bloom along the track. From the junction the track mainly descends to Pheasants Cave. Steps cut into the rock mark a steeper section.
A handrail offers assistance. After this the track becomes rocky. We soon stand in a stunning rainforest gully.
The temperature drops offering bliss on a hot day. Crossing a tiny creek we pass through dense forest. After 50 meters we arrive at Pheasants Cave. A massive tree has fallen. It’s easy to duck under. We are standing in a giant overhang.
Depending on recent rainfall there might be a waterfall. The cave is not easily climbed into. But it’s a great spot to sit on boulders and relax.
It’s cool shady and the huge walls feel dramatic. The waterfall trickles adding to the atmosphere. This serene spot feels wild and hidden away.
Lyrebirds and pheasants frequent this area. It’s a perfect place for bird watchers. Bring your camera and binoculars.
To leave retrace your steps back to the junction nearly 500 meters away. It’s mainly uphill. At the junction take the path on the left. This heads up the stairs. From here it’s just 100 meters back to Du Faurs Rocks and your car.
Pheasants Cave provides an exhilarating experience. It disconnects you from the stress of everyday life. This magical wonder is well worth the visit.
