How many Buddha images can dance on the head of a pin? At the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda on Inle Lake, the answer isn’t a number, but a spectacle. Five gilded Buddha images, not dancing, but residing, at this revered pagoda are the heart of a vibrant festival. Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the most famous pagoda on Inle Lake, isn’t just a building. It’s a living, breathing testament to faith. Built sometime between 1112 and 1167 AD during the reign of King Alaungsithu, it’s said the location was chosen by the king’s royal barge. This barge, crafted with wood containing a philosopher’s stone, possessed supernatural power and came to rest at the very spot where the pagoda now stands. Inside, the five Buddha images, ranging from 9 to 18 inches tall, are almost entirely obscured by layers upon layers of gold leaf. They are so heavy with gold that in 2019, the pagoda trustees had to ban further gilding. These images are the stars of the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda festival, held every year from September to October. Four of the five images are placed on a magnificent hintha bird-shaped barge. They are then towed around Inle Lake, stopping at fourteen villages along the way. Imagine the scene. Leg-rowers, their movements synchronized, pull the barge across the shimmering water. Accompanying boats create a flotilla of color and sound, while villagers from all around Inle Lake come to pay homage. This vibrant festival isn’t just a visual feast. It’s a chance for the community to come together, a demonstration of faith and tradition passed down through generations. One of the festival’s most thrilling aspects are the boat races. Here, the unique leg-rowing style of Inle Lake takes center stage, a spectacle you won’t find anywhere else. So, next time you see a pin, remember the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda and its five golden Buddhas. They represent not just weight, but history, devotion, and the vibrant spirit of Inle Lake.
