Pfarrkirche St. Ägyd

Look at the tower of Pfarrkirche St. Ägyd. It stands majestically in front of you. The Pfarrkirche St. Ägyd, also known as the Gumpendorfer Pfarrkirche, is a Roman Catholic church in the 6th district of Vienna, Mariahilf. For centuries, it has been a place of worship and a community hub. The church has a long and fascinating history, dating back to the 13th century. Believe it or not, back then, an even older Roman watchtower stood where the church is now. The church is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. The façade is adorned with Ionic pilasters, and the tower features statues of Saint Joseph and Saint Leopold. Inside, the church is decorated with paintings by Martin Johann Schmidt, known as the “Kremser Schmidt”. You can see his magnificent works at the side altars. Look at the high altar. The painting above it is a masterpiece, showing the glory of Saint Ägyd. The church is not just a place of worship, it is also a place of history. Joseph Haydn, a famous Austrian composer, was laid to rest in this very church. A plaque dedicated to him can be seen on the left side of the entrance.
