Hidden within Vienna’s 16th district, the Pfarrkirche Maria Namen whispers tales of resilience and community. The church we see today, a modern structure of exposed concrete, wasn’t the first to grace this spot. The story begins during the turbulent times of the early 20th century, a period marked by hardship and housing shortages in Ottakring. The area desperately needed a spiritual anchor, a place of solace. In 1930, a plot of land, originally a timber yard, was purchased at the corner of Hasnerstraße and Hippgasse. The dream of a grand church was momentarily dashed by the Great Depression. Undeterred, the community rallied. An existing shed on the timber yard was insulated with Heraklith panels, transforming it into a makeshift church. This “Notkirche,” as it was called, held 600 people. It was consecrated in 1933 during the Catholic Congress held in Vienna. A poignant reminder of this era is the crucifix, originally carried by a Tyrolean traditional group during the congress, now housed within the present-day Pfarrkirche Maria Namen. This Notkirche served as a filial church of the Neulerchenfeld parish. Then, in 1939, it became an independent parish church. Decades later, after the devastation of World War II, the dream of a new church was revived. Construction began in 1972 under architect Otto Nobis. The Pfarrkirche Maria Namen, as we now know it, was consecrated in 1974, again during a Catholic Congress. Several cherished items, including the crucifix and a Fatima statue, were transferred from the old Notkirche. New additions graced the space, such as a statue of Mary and a freestanding tabernacle. The colorful mosaic glass windows add a vibrant touch. Listen closely, and you can hear the four bells, cast in 1974, ringing out across the district. The Pfarrkirche Maria Namen stands not only as a testament to faith, but as a symbol of the community’s enduring spirit, a story etched in concrete and glass.
