What whispers of faith and resilience echo within the walls of Pfarre Herz-Jesu-Sühnekirche? Right here in Hernals, this church, a solemn beauty in the Neo-Romanesque style, stands as a testament to Vienna’s enduring spirit. The Pfarre Herz-Jesu-Sühnekirche, often called Sühnekirche, meaning “Atonement Church”, speaks to a period of reflection and rebuilding following the tumultuous years of World War I. The year was 1932 when this house of worship first opened its doors.

The story of Pfarre Herz-Jesu-Sühnekirche is deeply interwoven with the Canisiuswerk, a Catholic association devoted to fostering religious vocations. They commissioned its construction, entrusting it to the care of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The church stands on what was once known as the Frauenfeld, a place etched in history. It was here, during the 1683 Battle of Vienna, that Polish King John III Sobieski led a decisive charge against the Ottoman forces. In his company was a revered image of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa. This victory, attributed in part to divine intervention, led Pope Innocent XI to establish the Feast of the Name of Mary, a tradition still vibrantly celebrated within the Pfarre Herz-Jesu-Sühnekirche.

The church’s interior, although modest, radiates a peaceful aura. In the 1950s, artist Ernst Bauernfeind, known for his captivating stained glass work, redesigned the altar and other elements. He later graced the church with a new apse mosaic in 1991. That same year, the church welcomed a new organ built by the renowned German firm, Orgelbau Eisenbarth. Its French-inspired sound adds a layer of sonic richness to the services. Today, the Pfarre Herz-Jesu-Sühnekirche remains a vital hub for the community, hosting a variety of events and activities from lively parish cafes to inspiring concerts.
