Dedicated in 1916 Petworth United Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its story begins not here on Illinois and New Hampshire Avenues but several blocks away. The original Petworth Methodist Episcopal Church a small red brick building welcomed its first congregation in 1906. This modest chapel quickly outgrew its space.

Ambitious plans for expansion were drawn up. A grander structure was envisioned. These plans however never materialized. Instead in 1914 the little church became a temporary schoolhouse. A needed resource for the growing Petworth district. This unexpected shift paved the way for the church we see today.

The decision to build a new church was made in 1915. Charles E. Wire a member of the congregation oversaw construction. The cornerstone was laid by the Grand Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons of the District of Columbia. Grand Master Alexander Grant presided over the ceremony. The dedication on October 8 1916 marked a pivotal moment. The new church was a significant achievement for the community.

The Tudor-Gothic design is striking. Its octagonal shape is said to be inspired by the architecture of John Wesley’s time. The founder of Methodism. The auditorium comfortably seated 500 people. It could accommodate up to 800 with special seating arrangements. Imagine the hymns echoing through the building. The fervent prayers filling the space.

Petworth United Methodist Church has not only been a spiritual haven but also a community center. It played a vital role in the Petworth neighborhood’s development. This place of worship continues to serve as a cornerstone of faith. A place of solace and a hub for fellowship for generations. This building stands as a powerful symbol of resilience community and enduring faith in the heart of Washington DC.
