After World War Two, an influx of Protestant refugees and displaced people arrived in Cologne’s Merheim district. This led to a boom in the congregation of the Protestant church in the area. This presented a problem. Where could they hold their services? Initially, they gathered at the Johanneskirche in Brück, and later, in the Merheim elementary school’s hall. The need for a dedicated space for worship became clear, and in 1966, a church building association was formed. With their dedication, and the tireless efforts of Pastor Rolf Wagner, their dream became a reality. The Petruskirche, as it came to be known, held its first service on November 4, 1979. Look around you – almost every detail inside tells a story. Pastor Wagner himself crafted the cross, candleholders, and the lectern. Notice the carved dove on the baptismal font, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, also his work. He even made the hymn boards! And those silver baptismal font and jug? Gifts from no less than Prälat Paul Adenauer, son of former German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. But the Petruskirche’s story is also one of community and generosity. The bell tower, added in 1991, and its three bells were funded entirely by donations. The church’s interior also features gifts from the partner congregation in Zabrze, Poland, a gesture of gratitude for the Petrus community’s support. As you can see, the Petruskirche is more than just a building. It is a testament to the power of faith, community, and the enduring human spirit.
