Cricket oval, rotunda and playground. What do these things have in common at Peterson Park? They all add to the park’s unique character. Welcome to Peterson Park. This urban oasis sits in the Inner West of Sydney.

Peterson Park officially opened on September 28 1887. Before that, it was part of William Charles Wentworth’s estate. Think of those early days. People flocked here seeking respite from city life.

Take a look around at the Brush Box trees. These trees stand tall. They have witnessed countless games and gatherings. Camphor Laurel trees also add to the park’s charm. Their leaves create a shady canopy above.

Peterson Park is more than just a pretty space. It has a rich sporting history. Petersham Cricket Club has played here since the 1880s. Imagine the cheers and triumphs on this very ground. In summer, the oval hosts cricket matches. In winter, baseball takes over. The park adapts to the changing seasons.

Now let’s talk about a special moment in cricket history. On November 27 1926, Donald Bradman achieved a milestone here. As an 18-year-old, he scored his first century in grade cricket. He was playing for St George against Petersham. What a remarkable feat.

Notice the D. Seddon Pavilion on the oval’s west side. It commemorates Dudley Seddon. Nearby, the T.J.E. Andrews scoreboard honors Tommy Andrews. These landmarks celebrate local sporting heroes.

What about cooling off on a hot day? The Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre is right here at Peterson Park. It opened in September 1962. In 1999, it was named after Fanny Durack. She was an Australian swimming legend. The pool was refurbished between 2012 and 2014. It now features eight lanes. It is a 25-metre pool.

Peterson Park is also a community hub. The Inner West Council’s Magic Yellow Bus visits weekly. It offers free activities for kids aged six and under. It brings joy and laughter to young families.

At the Brighton Street entrance, you can see the ANZAC Memorial gates. These gates were originally part of the Petersham Town Hall. They were re-erected here in 1921. They serve as a reminder of those who served.

In February 2015, local residents rallied here. They protested a proposal to build WestConnex exit roads into the park. They wanted to save Petersham Park. Hundreds signed complaints. This shows how much the community values this space.

As you wander through Peterson Park, feel its history. Think about the cricket matches. Remember the community gatherings. Peterson Park continues to be a vital part of the Inner West. It is a place for sport, recreation and community.
