Ever imagine a train station so grand it was dubbed “First Class”? Right here in Petersham, the Petersham Railway Station Former Building stands as a testament to a time when rail travel was an opulent affair. Opened in 1885, this Victorian Italianate masterpiece, designed by George Cowdery, was the largest station in Sydney at the time, outshone only by Albury. Later, the north wing became home to the Railways and Tramways Hospital Fund in 1954, with an eastern wing added. The station platforms moved, and the 1885 building eventually became the home of the Rail Institute in 1999.
