“Spikes on a castle” is what some say the radio towers atop Castle Peak resemble. This isn’t just any hill. This is Castle Peak. Here we stand before a landmark steeped in challenge and rich rewards.

Castle Peak is not the tallest, but it’s one of the steepest peaks in Hong Kong. It is one of the “three sharp peaks” of Hong Kong. This mountain demands respect.

The hike to Peak Castle is a journey through history and stunning views. The path is about six kilometers. Give yourself about five hours for the trek. There will be lots of breaks for photos.

Our ascent begins following the Tsing Shan Monastery Path. This path is a four-minute walk from Tsing Shan Tsuen Light Rail Station. It’s a twenty-minute walk from Tuen Mun MTR station.

Notice the Heung Hoi Ming Shan Memorial Archway. It is an elaborately decorated stone gateway erected in 1929. It honors Sir Cecil Clementi, a former Hong Kong governor.

The paved road leads us to Tsing Shan Monastery. Take some time to wander through these spiritual grounds. Temples, pagodas and Buddhist structures abound. Look at the Daxiong Baodian. It’s the Main Buddha Hall. It is the largest Chinese-style building in Hong Kong. Three gilded Buddha statues reside inside. They have nearly 100 years of history.

Beyond the monastery, the real climb begins. A sign warns hikers of the steep path ahead. The trail changes dramatically as we ascend. Shaded, well-paved roads give way to rugged terrain. An open, rocky path emerges.

The final stretch is challenging. The handrails disappear. Slippery dirt and boulders make for a difficult climb. Stay alert. Tread carefully.

As we ascend, notice the white radio towers getting closer. Multiple viewing spots offer vistas of Tuen Mun below. Pause at the green pavilion. Take photos.

Finally, we reach the top of Peak Castle. The sweeping views stretch as far as the eye can see. Look towards Tuen Mun. See the shimmering waters of Shenzhen Deep Bay. The sunset is especially romantic from here. The fiery red and orange hues illuminate the surroundings.

Hikers can see three skylines on a clear day. These skylines are of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Macau. It will take about 70 minutes to climb up.

Sir Robert Ho Tung and Lady Clara Ho Tung hiked here in 1922. They were exhausted. Robert decided to build a rest spot. Yup Hiu Pavilion was completed in 1932.

Remember the loose gravel underfoot as we descend. Those with energy can explore a different path down. Continue north on the ridge towards Leung Tin Au. This route adds two kilometers. It offers an adventure through weathered terrain.

Civilization awaits at Leung King Estate. Buses and the light rail provide transport. Take a moment to appreciate what we’ve accomplished. We conquered Castle Peak.
